Samsung has officially unveiled its first tri-fold tablet device, the Galaxy Z Tab, at a spring product launch event in San Jose. The device features a 14.6-inch display when fully unfolded that can be configured in multiple form factors, from a standard phone size to a laptop-style arrangement with one panel serving as a keyboard surface.
The Galaxy Z Tab uses Samsung's latest Ultra Thin Glass technology, which the company claims offers 60 percent improved durability over previous foldable displays. Priced starting at $1,799, the device targets creative professionals and business users who need a versatile mobile computing solution without carrying multiple devices.
Pre-orders begin April 21, with shipping expected in mid-May. Initial analyst reactions have been cautiously optimistic, with several noting that the tri-fold form factor addresses many of the practical limitations that constrained earlier foldable devices.
