Apple is reportedly testing an expanded satellite communication feature for iPhones that would allow non-emergency text messaging in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. According to people familiar with the matter, the feature builds on the existing Emergency SOS via Satellite capability and could launch with iOS 20 this fall.
The expanded service would support short text messages and low-resolution image sharing through Apple's partnership with Globalstar, which has been upgrading its satellite constellation to handle increased data throughput. Messages would be delivered with latency of 30 to 90 seconds depending on satellite positioning and atmospheric conditions.
Telecommunications analysts say the feature could be particularly valuable for outdoor enthusiasts, rural residents, and travelers in areas with limited infrastructure. The service is expected to be offered as a paid subscription, potentially bundled with Apple One plans, though pricing details have not been finalized.
