Microsoft has released the first public preview build of Windows 12, featuring a completely redesigned interface centered around an AI-powered desktop assistant called Copilot OS. The new operating system represents the biggest change to Windows since the introduction of Windows 10.

Copilot OS goes far beyond the Copilot integration in Windows 11. The AI assistant can understand context across all open applications, summarize meetings, draft emails, organize files, and even automate complex multi-step workflows through natural language commands.

The visual redesign includes a floating taskbar, dynamic wallpapers that respond to system activity, and a new notification system that uses AI to prioritize alerts based on user behavior. The Start menu has been replaced with an AI-powered command center.

System requirements have increased, with Microsoft recommending at least 16GB RAM and a Neural Processing Unit for the full AI experience. Older hardware will still be supported but with limited AI functionality.

The preview is available to Windows Insider program participants, with a general release expected in early 2027. Enterprise customers will receive extended Windows 11 support until 2030.
