Google DeepMind has announced a new AI model capable of designing entirely novel protein structures in minutes rather than the months required by traditional computational methods. The model builds on the success of AlphaFold and could accelerate drug discovery and materials science.
In benchmark tests, the model generated viable protein designs that were subsequently validated in laboratory experiments with a 78 percent success rate. Researchers say this could dramatically reduce the cost and timeline of developing new therapeutics.
The model will be made available to academic researchers through a cloud-based platform later this year.
