Microsoft has released a public preview build of Windows 12 that features a completely redesigned AI assistant experience deeply integrated into the operating system. The new Copilot system can perform complex multi-step tasks across applications, including drafting documents based on email threads, organizing files by project context, and automating repetitive workflows.

The preview build also introduces a new modular interface that allows users to customize their desktop layout with configurable widgets and application panels. System performance improvements include a redesigned memory management system that Microsoft claims reduces RAM usage by up to 25 percent compared to Windows 11.

Early reviewers have praised the AI integration for its contextual awareness and reduced latency, though privacy advocates have raised concerns about the amount of user data processed locally and in the cloud. Microsoft says all AI processing defaults to on-device computation, with cloud features requiring explicit opt-in from users.
